Course Description
Thomas Jefferson wrote that "the greatest service which can be rendered any country is to add a useful plant to its culture." With the development of human civilization, plants have been gradually immerging into the cultural gene all over the world. This course reviews and analyzes western and oriental gardens over the last 3500 years.
This free, self-paced course is divided into four chapters:
- Chapter One explores the sensory feast presented by plants in terms of vision, hearing, smell, touch, taste, and introduces plant species, garden art, and designing methods.
- Chapter Two introduces how to appreciate oriental gardens and their planting design, integrating Chinese natural and sociocultural views into the plants landscape.
- Chapter Three provides a brief look at the development of planting design in western traditional gardens, from ancient gardens to English natural landscape gardens.
- Chapter Four introduces the basic techniques of modern landscape planting design, emphasizing harmony between blankness and fullness, sparseness and denseness, openness and closeness as well as stillness and motion.
Through this course, you'll learn how to appreciate landscape plants, master methods of matching plant species to space, promote artistic thinking and aesthetic interest, and learn artistic gardening techniques.
