Fellowship Description

The Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship is a prestigious, merit-based program that supports advanced research by postdoctoral scholars in the core areas of fundamental chemistry or the development and build of chemical instrumentation. This fellowship serves as a catalyst from "mentored yet independent" postdocs to outstanding, independent researchers in academic or industry/governmental labs.

Fellowship Location

The fellowship is tenable at qualifying U.S. nonprofit institutions with appropriate laboratory facilities. Fellows must have identified a mentor in the chemical sciences at a U.S. institution. Fellows who accept an academic faculty or full-time research position at a U.S. research institution may transition their current program year funding to their new institution.

Fellowship Deadline

The application portal is generally open for submissions June – September each year. For the 2027 program year, the Letter of Intent deadline is typically in September 2026.

Level and Fields of Study

Level: Postdoctoral research.

Two fellowship tracks (applicants choose one):

Chemical Sciences: Supports chemists pursuing advanced research within fundamental chemistry, such as chemical physics, chemical engineering, or the chemistry of materials. The underlying proposed research and innovation must be chemistry-focused, although the project can have applications in other fields.

Chemical Instrumentation: Supports researchers in chemistry to conceptualize, develop, and build instrumentation suitable to advanced research in chemistry, chemical physics, chemical engineering, and the chemistry of materials science. Instrumentation projects must be suitable to the two-year fellowship timeframe, be driven by a need in the listed chemical sciences, and be innovative in method, speed, or process.

Target Group

U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients with a PhD in the chemical sciences. The fellowship supports postdoctoral researchers who are within 18 months of cumulative postdoctoral experience or current graduate students anticipated to complete their PhD by May 1, 2027. The Foundation seeks applicants from all backgrounds and strives to ensure a fair process for selection of awardees.

Fellowship Duration & Amount

Duration: Two years (with possibility for third year by renewal).

Funding:

• Chemical Sciences: $224,000 over 2 years for salary, fringe benefits, and research expenditures
• Chemical Instrumentation: $224,000 over 2 years for salary, fringe benefits, and research expenditures, plus an additional one-time payment of up to $200,000 for material/development costs
• Optional third year: $118,000 in funding for salary, fringe, and research expenditures, dependent upon review of research progress and a renewal application

Additional benefits:

• Fellows who accept an academic faculty or full-time research position at a U.S. research institution may transition their current program year funding to their new institution
• Access to the Beckman Symposium highlighting the work of recipients
• Membership in the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA)

Fellowship Eligibility

Applicant criteria:

• Citizenship: U.S. citizen, permanent resident of the United States or its possessions, or DACA recipient.
• Degree status: Current graduate student anticipated to complete a PhD in the chemical sciences by May 1, 2027, or current postdoctoral researcher with a conferred PhD in the chemical sciences with no more than 18 months of cumulative postdoctoral research experience.
• Research focus: Must pursue postdoctoral training within the core areas of fundamental chemistry (chemical physics, chemical engineering, or chemistry of materials).
• Mentor: Must have identified a mentor in the chemical sciences at a qualifying U.S. nonprofit institution.
• Exclusivity: Mentor must commit to sponsoring only one applicant in this program cycle.
• Faculty status: Applicants cannot be adjunct faculty during the fellowship.

Ineligibility conditions:

• Visa holders are not eligible to apply.
• Applicants with more than 18 months of cumulative postdoctoral experience.
• Applicants more than 3 years from their PhD (with exceptions for documented leaves of absence).
• Applicants may not submit applications to both tracks in a single program year.

Mentor criteria:

• PhD or MD/PhD.
• Full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty with at least 25% appointment in a department affiliated with chemistry, chemical physics, chemical engineering, or the chemistry of materials science.

Application Procedure

1. Review eligibility and program guidelines – Confirm you meet all criteria and choose the appropriate track (Chemical Sciences or Chemical Instrumentation).
2. Identify a mentor – Secure a sponsoring mentor at a qualifying U.S. nonprofit institution. The mentor must commit to sponsoring only one applicant in this program cycle.
3. Set up an account – Create an account in the Beckman Foundation Online Grant System.
4. Prepare Letter of Intent (LOI) – Submit the following documents:
   • Applicant profile with scanned documentation of citizenship/permanent residency
   • LOI-Proposal: 3 pages (Chemical Sciences) or 4 pages (Chemical Instrumentation) with figures and tables
   • References
   • Institutional letter of support from the highest signing authority
5. Blind your proposal – In an effort to avoid bias, the Foundation blinds all information pertaining to applicants' name, gender, ethnicity, citizenship status, and institutional information. Do not include identifying information in the proposal.
6. Submit LOI – Complete and submit the online application by the September deadline.
7. Full Proposal – If invited, submit a Full Proposal through the same application portal.
8. Notification – Award notifications are generally released in late February.

Important notes: Incomplete applications and/or materials received after the deadline will be eliminated from the competition. The Foundation supports the ethical use of generative AI tools but holds human authors accountable for all work. Awardees must acknowledge the Foundation in publications and presentations.
