Scholarship Description

The Music Center Spotlight Program is a free performing arts program and competition that empowers Southern California high school students of all skill levels. Each year, the program awards $100,000 in scholarships to talented young artists across multiple performing arts categories. Participants receive written feedback, access to mastery classes with world-renowned artists, performance opportunities, and more.

The Spotlight Program is designed to support and nurture young talent in the performing arts, investing in education, creativity, and artistic growth. Students have the opportunity to showcase their abilities, gain live audition experience, and receive college and career preparation. The program culminates in a Grand Finale performance at The Music Center in Los Angeles.

Scholarship Location

The program is based at The Music Center in Los Angeles, California. Students from the following Southern California counties are eligible to participate: Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Riverside, Imperial, Kern, and San Bernardino. Ballet students should check the rules page for out-of-state residency exceptions.

Scholarship Deadline

The application deadline for the 2027 Spotlight Program is October 12, 2026. Acting and Non-Classical Voice categories are capped at 300 applicants each and will close once they reach capacity — apply early.

Level and Categories

Level: High School (Grades 9-12) — students must be enrolled in high school as of December 31, 2026, and not a full-time college student.

Categories (students may apply in more than one):

• Acting (capped at 300 applicants)
• Ballet (check rules for out-of-state exceptions)
• Dance
• Classical Voice
• Non-Classical Voice (capped at 300 applicants)
• Classical Instrumental
• Contemporary Instrumental

Target Group

High school students (public, private, online, or homeschool) in the following Southern California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Riverside, Imperial, Kern, and San Bernardino. The program is open to students of all skill levels.

Scholarship Amount & Benefits

Total Awards: $100,000 in scholarships awarded annually.

Grand Prize Finalists: Students selected as Grand Prize Finalists participate in the Grand Finale at The Music Center, with rehearsals and performances in May 2027.

Scholarship Eligibility

Essential criteria:

• Residency: Must reside in or attend school in one of the eligible Southern California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Riverside, Imperial, Kern, or San Bernardino. Ballet students should check the rules page for out-of-state exceptions.
• Enrollment: Must be enrolled in high school (public, private, online, or homeschool) as of December 31, 2026.
• College status: Must not be a full-time college student.
• Availability: If selected as a Grand Prize Finalist, must be available for the Grand Finale rehearsal (Friday, May 21, 2027) and the Grand Finale show (Saturday, May 22, 2027).
• Application: Complete the online application and upload an audition video by October 12, 2026.
• Parental consent: If under 18, a parent/guardian must provide consent.

Application Procedure

1. Check eligibility – Ensure you reside or attend school in an eligible Southern California county and are enrolled in high school.
2. Visit the application page – Go to app.getacceptd.com/musiccenter.
3. Complete the online application – Fill out the application form by October 12, 2026. Be sure to use the student's name during registration.
4. Prepare and upload your audition video – Follow the filming tips provided on the website. See the rules page for specific requirements for each category.
5. Parental consent – If you are under 18, have a parent/guardian provide consent.
6. Apply early for capped categories – Acting and Non-Classical Voice are capped at 300 applicants each. These categories will close once they reach capacity.
7. Returning awardees – 2026 Semifinalist and Honorable Mention awardees automatically advance to Preliminary 2. All returning awardees must submit an application with the video placeholder (emailed to you).
8. Selection process – Applications are reviewed by distinguished judges. Selected participants advance through rounds, with Grand Prize Finalists performing at the Grand Finale.

Important notes: The program is free to participate. Students selected as Grand Prize Finalists must fully participate in all rehearsals and performances. Failure to do so will result in ineligibility for the Grand Prize scholarship award.
